So what can be done for men and women who have lost a substantial amount of hair but do not have sufficient hair in the donor area to have a transplant? Or post transplant cases who want the appearance of more density? Or cases of alopecia such as alopecia areata which are unsuited to hair transplant procedures. There is hope and its called Scalp Micropigmentation.

Scalp Micropigmentation is a technique where tiny black dots are created using tattoo ink on the scalp to create the illusion of hair roots. This technique works very well to camouflage balding areas in both men and women and can be done for very small patches as well as very large areas. It also works well in men who usually keep their hair cropped very short - the so call ‘buzz cut’ look.

It takes 2-3 sessions to provide adequate pigment density and once achieved the results last 4-5 years. During this time the tattoo ink is slowly resorbed from the skin. When required SMP can be done again to restore the initial results.

SMP is an excellent choice for men and women who do not have sufficient hair in the donor area for a hair transplant. It is also great for those who have failed to get results with previous hair transplantation and for conditions like alopecia areata and scarring alopecia, for which hair transplantation is not usually done. SMP can be used to hide an old hair transplant scar; this may need more than the standard 2-3 sessions though as scar tissue does not retain tattoo pigment well.
